Self-Contained Emergency Units

Battery packs must be tested monthly to ensure that emergency lights will function upon failure of the primary power supply.    

  • Depress the test button and observe whether the light comes on to test the circuitry

  • If possible, unplug the light to see if the light comes on and leave it unplugged for 20 to 30 minutes to ensure it remains lit

  • Check the area for unsafe conditions or fire hazards

  • Complete the record and document deficiencies observed

  • Ensure there are no obstructions in front of lights

 

Emergency and exit lights

Every exit door shall have an exit sign placed over or adjacent to it.

Alberta Building Code 3.4.5.1

Emergency lighting shall be provided to an average level of illumination not less than 10 lx at floor or tread level in exits, principal routes and corridors.

Alberta Building Code 3.2.7.3

Self contained emergency lighting unit equipment shall be tested at intervals not greater than one

month to ensure function and not greater than 12 months to ensure the unit will provide emergency

lighting for a duration equal to the design criterion under simulated power failure conditions.
